In the same vein, so to speak, best-selling novelist Anne Rice-whose sprawling tales embrace vampires, mummies, witches, and other things that go bump in the night-gave her blessing to Babcock Vineyards of Santa Barbara to create Cuvée Lestat wines, honoring her most famous creature of the night. The original Lestat Syrah and Chardonnay proved so drop-dead popular that Babcock added a Bordeaux-style "Claret." Each sells for $35 and features aptly lugubrious artwork by Rice's husband, the poet and painter Stan Rice. The reds might be described as dark and brooding; the Chardonnay is pale, sinewy and bone-dry. Too bad they all tend to clash with garlic.
